How to get the right fit when buying boots

How to get the right fit when buying boots

  1. You get what you pay for - go for quality

You don’t want to scrimp on price when it comes to boots. Generally, the price of a pair of boots will directly reflect the quality of the footwear, so be prepared to invest in good quality boots – guarantee it will be money well spent. Here at Genius Clothing and Footwear, Dublin we have the largest selection of Red Wing boots in Ireland and exclusively stock handmade Sendra boots from Spain.

  2. Buy from a reputable retailer with a fitting service

Always visit a reputable footwear retailer with staff trained in fitting footwear. Here at  Genius Clothing and Footwear, Dublin we have a team of experienced staff that will be able to guide you in selecting the brand, style and model that fits you best and is most suited to your foot and your lifestyle.

  3. Avoid Online Shopping – Try before you buy

Don’t be tempted to buy boots online (even if they are ‘on sale’ or ‘discounted’) as you won’t know if they will be the right fit – and you’ll just end up returning them with the associated return costs, or worse, keeping them and not being able to wear them.

  4. Getting the right fit

Fit is more than a size. In fact, proper fitting must account for foot length, width, arch, instep and “heel to ball” measurement, along with overall foot shape. Your entire foot should feel snug except for your heel; your heel will always slip a little in a properly fitted new boot. The slippage will disappear when you've broken in the boot. Have a bit of wiggle room for your toes in the front of the boots.  We are here to help you choose the right pair and to get the perfect fit.

  5. Break in your boots…and don’t forget about socks!

One of the most common mistakes we see guys make when trying to break in new boots is not wearing a proper pair of boot socks that are designed for the job. In fact, when buying boots such as Red Wing boots, it is crucial to wear boot socks when trying on to determine the right fit and to help prevent blistering and discomfort while breaking in your new boots.  The right socks really are a game changer!

  6. Take Care of your boots…

Once you’ve found the right pair of boots, take care of them and you’ll be rewarded in the long run.  Red Wing Heritage's premium leathers, triple stitching, and welt construction create supremely durable footwear that can last for decades. It takes more than 230 steps to build each pair, but only three to keep boots clean, conditioned, and protected.  Purchasing a care kit and cleaning your boots every few months (depending on usage) will help extend the life of your investment.  And another pro-tip from Genius, buy a second pair of laces to have on hand – maybe in a different colour – to give your boots a new lease of life.
